During the attack of the Turks in 1691, the explosion of gunpowder destroyed the roof and the dome of the cathedral, which was not restored afterwards. In 1770 the artillery of the Russian General Totleben destroyed the Kutaisi fortress and the entire eastern part of the Bagrat temple.

In the XIII century the monastery ensemble was added to the church of St. Nicholas and St. George, as well as a three-tier belfry. Mural painting refers to different periods of Georgian history, from the 12th to the 18th century; Especially noteworthy are portrait portraits of crowned persons.
